Match a Mitzvah
The Forever Chai Foundation of Canada offers an excellent opportunity for boys and girls approaching their Bar or Bat Mitzvah to help less fortunate children. The Match A Mitzvah program directly benefits Israeli children desperately in need of support through the Shabtai Levi Home, Israel’s primary refuge and residential facility for young children who have been physically or emotionally abused, neglected and abandoned.
When you give money to Shabtai Levi, you are saving a child’s life…otherwise these children would be lost forever
- a chief hospital administrator, Tel Aviv
Located in Haifa, the Shabtai Levi Home helps children, from newborns to age 7, along with their mothers whenever possible, receive intensive treatment aimed at giving them a second chance at living healthy and productive lives after a horrific start. The stories of these children are compelling indeed. Toddlers are found wandering shoeless, unfed and alone in streets, their parents mere youths themselves. Some will not speak. Many children do not have a bed or a place to sleep, as their parents struggle with drug addiction or their own victimization from domestic violence.
Registering with Match A Mitzvah gives the Bar Mitzvah boy or Bat Mitzvah girl several options to choose from. The parents and child can accumulate gifts towards a particular goal at the Home, or the Bar/Bat Mitzvah invitations can include a donation card for tax-deductible donations. Another approach is for the Bar/Bat Mitzvah child to contribute to specific needs of an individual child at Shabtai Levi. Every Match A Mitzvah participant helps make a huge difference in the lives of these children and for future generations in Israel.
Choosing the type of care to support, may be your child’s first independent exercising of the responsibility of Bar or Bat Mitzvah– a life lesson in tzedekah. A child’s stay at Shabtai Levi can be as long as a year and a half, and longer if necessary. There is always a waiting list, even in emergencies. The good news is that a large number of children and mothers come through treatment successfully and resume normal healthy lives. Since Forever Chai Foundation of Canada (FCFC) began to raise awareness and support on behalf of the Shabtai Levi Home, the FCFC has raised more than $1.5 million from generous donations in the GTA. The FCFC is now Shabtai Levi’s largest single source of revenue outside of the basic State-operating subsidy.
